The Friends of Ojibway Prairie is a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting public awareness of the Ojibway Prairie Complex and its unique biological and historical importance. The Friends work closely with the City of Windsor and Ontario Parks to provide assistance with educational programs, special events and restoration projects.
Our Mission
The Friends of Ojibway Prairie protects our diverse ecosystem through education and restoration.
OUR VISION
Everyone in Windsor - Essex knows, loves and values the natural, cultural and historical features of the expanding Ojibway Tallgrass Prairie.
What Do We Do?
Education: The Friends of Ojibway supports education through Nature Walks, Talks, and wonderful programs like Ojibway on the Go.
Ojibway on the Go
We are pleased to support this collaborative program series offered by the Windsor Public Library and the Ojibway Nature Centre. Each session includes an exploration and lesson on the natural world around us in Windsor-Essex, story time, and a craft sponsored by FOOP. Join us for one, or for all! No registration required.
Walks and Talks: Nature walks and talks by guest speakers highlight the ecological significance of the Ojibway Prairie Complex.
We had a wonderful turnout with over 60 people attending this talk by Dr. Steven Paiero. It really was all the buzz!!
This Spring Birding Walk was led by FOOP member Nicole Shangi as part of the 2025 Jane’s Walk Weekend. We are pleased to be participating in Jane’s Walk Windsor/Essex again on the weekend of May 2-3, 2026. Stay tuned for details about this year’s event.
Restoration: The Friends of Ojibway Prairie is pleased to support conservation efforts, including invasive species control through the prescribed burn program.
Annual Matchett Road Cleanup: Volunteers come together each year to help keep the Ojibway corridor clean.
Advocating and Raising Awareness
The Friends of Ojibway Prairie continues to be on the forefront of advocacy for the establishment of a National Urban Park. We are also actively working to mobilize community support to protect the ecologically sensitive lands adjacent to the park from development, and to bring them under the protection of the park. Learn more about our efforts by visiting our Take Action page.
“Ojibway is very, very special. A place like this is a tiny pocket of nature that does remind us of what once was or could be. An area like this is priceless.”
